Castellane (04120, Alpes-de-Haute-Provence) is one of the most fascinating destinations in the south of France. A town of 1,500 inhabitants nestled in a meander of the Verdon, dominated by a dizzying 184-metre limestone rock, it constitutes the eastern entrance to the Verdon Gorge — the largest canyon in Western Europe.
Whether you're arriving for a day, a weekend, or a fortnight, this guide lists everything there is to do in Castellane: unmissable sites, documented hikes, sporting activities, excursions, local gastronomy, and practical, on-the-ground tested advice. From the Campsite La Ferme de Castellane (located 1.5 km from the centre), you can access everything in a few minutes.
Summary
château 184-metre limestone cliff — known locally as The Rock — which has dominated the city for millions of years. Perched at its summit: the Chapel of Our Lady of the Rock, built in 1703, accessible on foot in 20 to 30 minutes via a marked trail that starts from the town centre (set off from Rue de l’Église, signposted).
📋 PRACTICAL GUIDE — Le Roc de Castellane
The chapel is open during religious processions (15th August particularly). The Roc itself was a fortified medieval acropolis – the remains of ramparts can be discovered there, along with a breathtaking view over the Roman tiled roofs of the old town. Sunset from the summit: exceptional.
Le Provençal market in Castellane takes place Saturday morning (and Wednesday in July-August) on the Place Marcel Sauvaire, in the heart of the old town. It is one of the liveliest in the Alpes-de-Haute-Provence – local producers, artisans and traders gather there from 7:30 am.
🛒 WHAT YOU CAN FIND THERE
Advice: Arrive before 9 am for the best produce – the local sheep cheeses sell out quickly. Tourists arrive in droves between 9:30 am and 11 am. The market winds down around 12:30 pm.
The medieval centre of Castellane is worth a wander for one to two hours. The town has retained its medieval urban plan with its narrow alleyways, arcades and small squares shaded by century-old plane trees.
