Named in honour of the explorer Édouard-Alfred Martel – the first to descend the Gorges du Verdon in 1905 – the Blanc-Martel trail is the iconic route through the Grand Canyon of Provence. This 14 km (one way) GR99 path follows the bottom of the gorges from the Chalets de la Palud to Point Sublime.

The iconic sections of the trail
- Tunnels carved into the rock — Dark, with windows onto the void, they are the strongest point of the trail (headlamp MANDATORY).
- Metal ladders A few metres of verticality to get through steep sections, hands on the rock.
- The Imbert Gap A fissure in the cliff offering a panoramic view of the 300m deep canyon.
- The Samson Corridor — The spectacular entrance to the gorges, cliff faces narrowed to a few metres.

Preparing for your hike from Castellane
Access and logistics
The trail is a one-way route (14 km). There are two options for the return journey:
- The summer shuttle Point Sublime ↔ Chalets de la Palud, available from June to mid-September.
- Two cars — one at each end. From the Point Sublime, it takes 30 minutes to reach the campsite.
Since Camping La Ferme de Castellane, The Chalets de la Palud are a 15-minute drive away. It is recommended to leave before 9 am in July and August to avoid the heat and crowds in the tunnels.
Essential equipment
High-top hiking boots (for rocky terrain), head torch with new batteries (absolutely ESSENTIAL for the tunnels), at least 2 to 3 litres of water, a full picnic, a windbreaker (it gets chilly at the bottom of the gorges), and sun cream. Please avoid flip-flops, sandals and light trainers at all costs.
In season: practical information
the path is open from’April to October. Closed in winter (November to March) due to the risk of floods and water releases from the Castillon dam. In July-August, some tunnel sections can be busy – set off early in the morning to enjoy the peace and coolness of the gorges.
